Validating a quarter of retirement contributions: the threshold of €1,803 in 2026

In 2026, a basic pension quarter is validated when your gross annual income subject to contributions reaches €1,803. This threshold is equal to 150 times the gross hourly minimum wage in effect on January 1st of the year, i.e., €12.02 on January 1st, 2026. €3,606 is required for 2 quarters, €5,409 for 3, and €7,212 for 4. The maximum is 4 quarters per calendar year.

This page deals with private sector employees and micro-entrepreneurs. It does not cover tradespeople and merchants not operating as micro-enterprises, nor the liberal professions under the actual tax regime, nor farmers, nor the situation of people residing abroad.

The €1,803 threshold and its calculation

According to the official information sheet on service-public.gouv.fr, the threshold is calculated as follows: the gross hourly minimum wage in effect on January 1st of the year, multiplied by 150 hours. It is therefore recalculated every year.

Quarters validatedGross annual income subject to contributions (2026)
1€1,803
2€3,606
3€5,409
4€7,212

Three key points to remember:

  • The maximum is 4 quarters per calendar year. Earning more than €7,212 does not add a fifth.
  • A maximum of 2 quarters in one month. Contributions are calculated each month within the limit of the monthly Social Security ceiling (€4,005 gross in 2026), and the retirement insurance validates a maximum of 2 quarters in a month.
  • The threshold has been calculated over 150 hours since 2014. From 1972 to 2013, according to the same document, the minimum income was the gross hourly minimum wage in force during each period worked, multiplied by 200 hours.

An example of how to interpret this: an employee who earns €7,000 gross per year has accrued 3 quarters of pension contributions. They are €212 short of the fourth.

Periods without contributions also validate quarters.

Certain periods are treated as periods of contributions. The table is based on official forms F1761 (private sector employee) and F31249 (unemployment and retirement); the duration of compensated unemployment is taken from the latter.

SituationOne quarter validated for
Illness or work-related accident (daily allowances)each 60-day compensation period
Maternity (daily allowances)each 90-day compensation period
National Service90 days of enrollment
Unemployment benefits50 days of unemployment, consecutive or not
Training courses, particularly for job seekerseach 50-day internship period
Partial unemployment (since March 1, 2020)220 compensated hours
Disabilityeach calendar quarter comprising 3 monthly disability pension payments
Caregiver for a disabled adult (disability of at least 80% %)30 months, up to a maximum of 8 quarters

The same disability rule applies to a work accident annuity with a permanent disability of at least 66 %.

A common misconception to avoid: the "50 days" do not apply to the illness.

A quarter of pension contributions is not validated for every 50 days of sick leave or maternity leave. This is not what the official documents state. The 50-day figure refers to unemployment and internships. For sick leave, it's 60 days. For maternity leave, it's 90 days.

Unemployment in detail

  • Unemployment benefits entitle you to one quarter of pension credit for every 50 days, up to a maximum of four quarters per calendar year. The benefits covered include unemployment benefits (ARE), specific solidarity allowance (ASS), and partial activity allowance. Periods of deferred compensation and waiting periods also count towards pension credit.
  • Unemployment without benefits following a period of benefits is taken into account up to a limit of one year. This limit increases to five years if three conditions are met: being at least 55 years old at the end of the benefit period, having contributed for at least 20 years (80 quarters) across all basic pension schemes, and not having any entitlement with a new basic pension fund.
  • For a person without any compensation in their career, the first period of uncompensated unemployment is taken into account up to a limit of one and a half years (6 quarters) from 2011, and one year (4 quarters) before 2011.
  • Before 1980, all periods of unemployment, whether compensated or not, are taken into account.
  • Registering with France Travail at the end of studies does not entitle you to any pension rights.

The children

The quarters granted as child-related bonuses are not allocated to a specific year. Their rules are explained on another page.

The year of departure

If you retire mid-year, the calculation of contributions stops on the last day of the calendar quarter preceding your retirement date. The information sheet provides an example: for a retirement date of September 1st, the calculation stops on June 30th. Even if your salary for the year validates four quarters, only two are counted.

Non-contributory periods in the year of departure are subject to a similar limit: they cannot count as more quarters than those actually accrued. The document cites a work-related accident leave from January 1st to June 30th, with a departure on July 1st: only 2 quarters are counted.

The micro-entrepreneur: a calculation based on turnover

A micro-entrepreneur cannot accrue more than 4 quarters per year. For 2026, the information sheet on entreprendre.service-public.gouv.fr describes the method:

  1. the flat-rate payment is applied to the turnover; ;
  2. the basic pension distribution rate is applied to the result; ;
  3. We divide by 17.87 %, the basic pension contribution rate for 2026: we obtain the contributory income; ;
  4. We divide the contributed income by €1,803 and round down to the nearest whole number.
Activity (2026)Lump sum payment rateDistribution rate, basic pension
Sale of goods12.3%43.45%
Services provided (BIC)21.2%43.45%
Liberal profession outside of Cipav25.6 % (since January 1, 2026)46.40%

Liberal professions affiliated with Cipav follow a different rule. In 2026, their annual turnover must reach €2,792 for 1 quarter, €5,584 for 2, €8,376 for 3 and €11,168 for 4.

Numerical example (fictitious profile)

Situation. Camille is a consultant, working as a freelance professional outside of the Cipav pension scheme, and operates as a micro-enterprise. Her 2026 turnover is €8,000 (based on a hypothetical profile).

Issue. She thinks that a turnover of €8,000 allows her to validate 4 quarters, because it exceeds €7,212. However, the threshold of €1,803 applies to income subject to contributions, not to turnover.

Strategy. Apply the official form method, step by step. The firm reviews her status, annual income, and career summary with her.

Result.

StepCalculationAmount
Lump sum payment€8,000 × 25.6 %€2,048.00
Basic pension contribution€2,048 × 46.40 %€950.27
Contributed income€950.27 ÷ 17.87 % (calculation based on unrounded amounts)€5,317.69
Quarters€5,317.69 ÷ €1,803 = 2.95, rounded down to the nearest whole number2 quarters

Camille validates 2 quarters, not 4. With a turnover of €12,000, the same calculation gives 4.42: she would validate 4 quarters, the annual maximum.

This profile is fictitious. Intermediate amounts are rounded to the nearest cent for display purposes, but the calculation is based on the unrounded amounts (starting from €950.27 entered as is would give €5,317.68, without changing the number of quarters). It assumes the 2026 rates from the official document. It illustrates the mechanics. It does not predict your specific situation.

What changes depending on your situation

  • Your status Employees, micro-entrepreneurs, and Cipav members are not subject to the same rules. Other statuses are not addressed here.
  • Your validation year : the threshold is recalculated each year with the minimum wage (SMIC) of January 1st.
  • Your periods without contributions Illness, maternity, unemployment, disability, and internships each have their own duration.
  • Your year of departure : the count stops at the last completed calendar quarter.
  • Your home The situation of people who reside abroad is not addressed on this page.

The rule depends on your situation. No results are guaranteed.
