For retirement starting on or after September 1, 2026, the legal retirement age is 62 years and 9 months for those born in 1964 and those born between January and March 1965. Those born in 1963 have the same age listed in fact sheet F14043 on service-public.gouv.fr, which does not mention the suspension. The age then increases in three-month increments up to those born in 1968 (63 years and 9 months). It reaches 64 for those born in 1969 or later. The increase in the legal retirement age and the required contribution period planned by the 2023 reform is suspended until 2028.
This page provides the applicable retirement ages for pensions taking effect from September 1, 2026. It does not reflect the previous schedule. It does not address civil servants and special pension schemes, nor the situation of individuals who have lived or worked abroad, nor supplementary pensions. It also does not detail the specific circumstances of certain relatives. These situations are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
What has changed: the suspension of the reform
Law No. 2025-1403 of December 30, 2025, on financing social security for 2026, suspended the 2023 reform. Service-public.gouv.fr states that the raising of the legal age and the increase in the insurance period "are suspended until 2028".
Two dates to remember:
- The suspension applies to pensions that take effect from September 1, 2026. It is the effective date of the retirement that counts, not the date of your application.
- It lasts until 2028. The service-public.gouv.fr page announcing the measure is dated February 27, 2026.
A direct consequence for those born in 1968: service-public.gouv.fr states, "The legal retirement age of 64 will no longer apply to people born in 1968." The age of 64 applies to those born in 1969 or later.
The table by generation
Legal retirement age for pensions taking effect from 1 September 2026 (for line 1963, see the note below the table), with the number of quarters required to retire at the full rate:
| Year of birth | Legal retirement age | Quarters for the full rate |
|---|---|---|
| 1963 | 62 years and 9 months | 170 (42 years and 6 months) |
| 1964 | 62 years and 9 months | 170 |
| 1965, from January to March | 62 years and 9 months | 170 |
| 1965, from April to December | 63 years old | 171 (42 years and 9 months) |
| 1966 | 63 years and 3 months | 172 (43 years old) |
| 1967 | 63 years and 6 months | 172 |
| 1968 | 63 years and 9 months | 172 |
| 1969 and 1970 | 64 years old | 172 |
Lines 1964 to 1968 are taken from news page A18825 on service-public.gouv.fr. Line 1963 comes from records F14043 and F14044, as page A18825 does not contain any entries. These two records do not mention the suspension.
To find out when you reach the legal retirement age, add it to your date of birth. Someone born on May 10, 1964, will turn 62 years and 9 months old on February 10, 2027.
The quarters column has its own dedicated page. Remember this rule: the legal retirement age grants the right to retire, but it does not, on its own, entitle you to a full pension.
The full rate: two paths
A full pension is a pension granted without any reduction, meaning without any decrease in its amount. You can obtain it in two ways:
- Between the legal age and 67 years old, if you can demonstrate the number of quarters required for your generation.
- At 67 years old, regardless of your number of quarters of contributions, according to fact sheet F14044 on service-public.gouv.fr.
If you retire before age 67 with fewer quarters of contributions than required, a reduction will apply. This is explained on another page.
Situations that allow you to obtain the full rate earlier
Service-public.gouv.fr lists cases where the full pension rate is obtained before age 67:
- At 62 years old, if you are deemed unfit for work.
- At 60 years old, if you have a permanent work-related disability of at least 10 %.
- At 65, if you have stopped working for at least 30 consecutive months to help a disabled person.
- From age 55, for early retirement due to disability, under certain conditions.
Each case has its own specific conditions, which this page does not detail.
Long careers: lower retirement ages too
The suspension also applies to early retirement for long careers. Service-public.gouv.fr published on July 15, 2026 (updated July 17, 2026) the retirement ages for those who started working before age 20. A decree dated May 7, 2026, specifies the implementation details. Only those whose retirement takes effect on or after September 1, 2026, are affected.
| Year of birth | Early retirement age for a long career (starting work before age 20) | Quarters required |
|---|---|---|
| 1964 | 60 years and 6 months | 170 |
| 1965, from January 1st to November 30th | 60 years and 9 months | 170 (January to March) or 171 (April to November) |
| 1965, from December 1st to 31st | 60 years and 8 months | 171 |
| 1966 | 60 years and 9 months | 172 |
| 1967 | 61 years old | 172 |
| 1968 | 61 years and 3 months | 172 |
| 1969 | 61 years and 6 months | 172 |
| 1970 | 61 years and 9 months | 172 |
This table only applies to those who started working before age 20. A long career requires having started work before age 16, 18, 20, or 21 and having contributed for a specific number of quarters. The conditions for other ages of starting work are not covered here. These can be verified on your pension statement.
Numerical example (fictitious profile)
Situation. Marc, a salaried manager, was born on May 10, 1964. He wants to know his legal retirement age and the date he will reach it. Assumptions based on his profile: he will have accumulated 168 quarters of contributions by that date, and his retirement will take effect on that date.
Issue. What is his legal age, on what date does he reach it, and what pension rate would apply if his retirement took effect on that date with 168 quarters?
Strategy. Read the table, then apply the reduction rule. The number of quarters of reduction is the lesser of two differences: the number of quarters missing between retirement age and age 67, or the number of quarters missing compared to the number required for a full pension. The maximum is 20 quarters. Each quarter counted reduces the rate by 0.625.
Result.
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Legal age (1964 generation) | 62 years and 9 months |
| Date when Marc reaches this age | February 10, 2027 |
| Quarters required for the full rate | 170 |
| Missing quarters compared to 170 | 2 |
| Quarters between 62 years and 9 months and 67 years | 17 |
| Quarters taken into account for the discount (smallest difference) | 2 |
| Pension rate (assumed retirement effective on that date) | 48.75% (50 % − 2 × 0.625 %) |
Marc reaches the legal retirement age on February 10, 2027. If his retirement were to take effect on that date with 168 quarters of contributions, his rate would be 48.75 (%) instead of 50 (%). This rate corresponds to the "2 missing quarters" line in the reduction table on service-public.gouv.fr. It is applied to his average annual salary, which is explained on another page.
This profile is fictitious. The 168 quarters and the retirement date are hypothetical. The calculation illustrates the method. It does not predict your situation.
What changes depending on your situation
- Your exact date of birth. Those born in 1965 fall under two lines depending on the month.
- Your number of quarters. He determines the full pension rate before age 67. This can be found on your pension statement.
- The effective date of your retirement. The suspension applies to pensions that take effect from September 1, 2026.
- The age at which you started working. It grants or denies the right to a long career.
- Your diet. Civil servants, special schemes and careers abroad are not covered here.
- Your personal situation (unfitness, permanent disability, handicap, carer): each case has its own conditions.
The rule depends on your situation. No results are guaranteed.
