On the Isle of Man, personal income tax has two rates: 10% of taxable income (%) and then 21% of taxable income (2TP3T), with a tax-free allowance of £17,000 for a single person in 2026/27. The Isle of Man tax authorities state that there is no capital gains tax or inheritance tax. Residents declare their worldwide income. This page does not specify the criteria for tax residency on the island: the official document defining these criteria could not be accessed. It does not replace this criterion with a number of days residency.
A two-rate tax scale for 2026/27
| Element (fiscal year 2026/27) | Single person | Couple imposed jointly |
|---|---|---|
| Personal dejection | 17,000 £ | 34,000 £ |
| Standard rate | 10% | 10% |
| Upper rate threshold | 6,500 £ | 13,000 £ |
| Higher rate on the balance | 21% | 21% |
The standard rate of 10% applies to the first £6,500 of taxable income. The balance is taxed at 21%. The allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 of income above £100,000 (£200,000 for a couple filing jointly).
The tax brackets have changed. The top rate was 22 % in 2024/25, then 21 % in 2025/26 and 2026/27. The allowance for a single person increased from £14,750 in 2025/26 to £17,000 in 2026/27. The administration announces the changes in the budget, normally in February, for implementation on April 6th of the following year.
Fiscal year from April 6 to April 5, declaration before October 6
The tax year runs from April 6 to April 5. Returns are sent out in early April and must be submitted by October 6, either online or on paper. Tax is calculated on the income of the current tax year. Penalties apply for late filing.
A new resident completes form R25, "Registration for Manx Income Tax," as soon as possible after arrival. Couples are taxed separately by default. They can opt for joint taxation. Employers withhold tax from each paycheck. Anyone wishing to become self-employed must first contact the Income Tax Division.
Capital gains and inheritances: what the Mans administration says
The page for new residents states that the island has neither Capital Gains Tax nor Inheritance Tax. We reproduce this sentence verbatim. It says nothing about the taxation in France of a taxpayer who remains domiciled there, nor about the taxation in any other country where family or assets might be located.
Capping option: one amount read, conditions not read
The official tax rate schedule lists a tax cap election option: £220,000 for a single person and £440,000 for a couple in 2026/27, compared to £200,000 and £400,000 until 2024/25. The page refers to a guidance note (Guidance Note 51) whose text could not be read. Therefore, we do not know who can opt in, on what basis, or according to what procedure. This page does not present the cap as accessible.
Foreign tax: a unilateral relief
Residents are taxed on their worldwide income. If they have paid foreign tax, relief depends on the existence of a tax treaty with the country in question. Without such a treaty, it is assumed that all reasonable steps have been taken to reduce the foreign tax and that proof of such tax is provided. Relief is limited to the lesser of the foreign tax paid and the Manx tax due (section 57 of the Income Tax Act 1970).
The pages consulted do not list France among the countries with which the island has agreements. They do mention the agreement with the United Kingdom, in effect for income tax since April 6, 2019. The French list of tax treaties contains no entry for the Isle of Man: see our page on the absence of a tax treaty.
Social security contributions: what the page allows us to say
National Insurance contributions apply to individuals aged 16 and over but below the state pension age, currently 66. Employees, employers, and the self-employed all contribute. The 2026-27 rates and thresholds are detailed in documents we have not been able to access. The existence of a social security agreement between France and the island is not established here.
Reduction of the allowance to £120,000 of income: numerical example (fictitious profile)
Situation. A single person, a fictional profile, is a resident of the island in 2026/27. Their salary is £120,000 and they have no other income.
Issue. It assumes that the £17,000 allowance applies in full. However, it is reduced by £1 for every £2 above £100,000.
Strategy. She recalculates with the reduced allowance before setting her remuneration for the year. She leaves aside the capping option, the conditions of which are not detailed here.
Result. The reduction is £10,000, the allowance falls to £7,000, and the taxable income is £113,000. The tax is £650 at 10% of % on the first £6,500, plus £22,365 at 21% of % on £106,500, totaling £23,015, or 19.18% of the salary. With a salary of £80,000, the allowance remains full: the tax is £12,515, or 15.64% of the salary. These calculations do not include National Insurance or any other deductions.
Leaving the island: R26 form and non-resident tax rate
A permanent departure is declared using form R26. The final declaration covers the period from April 6th to the departure date, including worldwide income for that period. The tax allowance is reduced proportionally to the time spent on the island. A late filing penalty of £100 is incurred after 6 months, and an additional £200 after 12 months. Any payment is due within 30 days. In the case of a temporary absence, the administration may continue to classify you as a resident if you plan to return.
After leaving the country, Manx-sourced income, such as rents and occupational pensions, remains taxable at the non-resident rate of 21 %, without any allowance. On £10,000 of rent, the tax is £2,100. Bank interest, dividends, and the Manx state pension are not taxable for a non-resident, according to the departure page.
If you are arriving from France
French tax residence is determined according to the criteria set out in Article 4 B of the French General Tax Code (CGI), which defines three categories: only one is required (BOI-IR-CHAMP-10, § 70 and § 310). A stay of more than six months is not an absolute criterion (§ 150). Income earned abroad is taxable in France as long as the residence is there (BOI-INT-DG-20-10-10, § 70). In the event of departure, form 2042 covers the period from January 1st to the date of departure, form 2047 covers foreign-source income, and form 2042-NR covers French-source income from departure to December 31st.
What this page does not cover
It does not address the Manx tax residency requirement, the conditions for the capping option, National Insurance rates, residence permits, or local savings (accounts, life insurance). These points should be verified with a professional based on the island.
