For a redemption based on premiums paid since September 27, 2017, the income tax guide (form 2026, income received in 2025) divides the proceeds into three boxes. Box 2UU receives the total amount received. This total is then divided between box 2VV, for proceeds taxable at 7.5% (premiums not exceeding €150,000), and box 2WW, for proceeds taxable at 12.8% (premiums exceeding €150,000). The amount already paid to the insurer is generally pre-filled in box 2CK.
This page covers French tax residents, premiums paid since September 27, 2017, and the 2026 tax return for 2025 income. It does not cover premiums paid up to September 26, 2017, which are addressed in other sections. It also does not cover the details of the calculation for the allocation between 2VV and 2WW, the procedure for exemption from withholding tax, the case of a non-resident, or social security contributions, the rates of which are covered on a dedicated page.
The boxes to know
| Case | What the brochure places there | Rate indicated |
|---|---|---|
| 2UU | Total collected, to be divided between lines 2VV and 2WW | not applicable |
| 2VV | Products taxable at 7.5 %, corresponding to premiums not exceeding €150,000 | 7.5% |
| 2WW | Products taxable at 12.8 %, corresponding to premiums exceeding €150,000 | 12.8% |
| 2CK | Flat-rate withholding tax already paid | not applicable |
| 2ZZ | Proceeds from payments made from September 27, 2017 onwards, for contracts less than 8 years old | 12.8% |
| 2OP | Option to be taxed according to the progressive income tax scale for all income from movable capital and capital gains from the sale of securities | not applicable |
The brochure places 2UU, 2VV, and 2WW in the block for contracts of 8 years or more, and 2ZZ in the block for contracts of less than 8 years. Therefore, a redemption on a contract of less than 8 years does not go through 2UU, 2VV, and 2WW.
These boxes are those of form 2042 K of the 2026 declaration. The boxes of the following declaration are checked on the form of the year.
Where does the amount to be carried forward come from?
Every redemption includes a portion of capital, which is tax-free, and a portion of gains, which is taxable (service-public.gouv.fr). Only the gains portion is taxable income. For a partial redemption, the BOFiP (Official Bulletin of Public Finances) specifies the calculation of the taxable income:
partial redemption amount − [total premiums paid to the date of redemption × (partial redemption amount ÷ total redemption value to the date of redemption)]
For a subsequent redemption, any repayments already made are taken into account: the premiums considered are those that have not already been reimbursed as a lump sum. Taxation occurs upon termination of the contract or upon partial redemption. Gains are taxed in the year of the redemption.
The paying institution will provide you with a receipt, the IFU. If the pre-filled amount on your declaration is incorrect, it will be corrected.
The €150,000 threshold: what is confirmed, what needs to be verified
The rates of 7.5% and 12.8% depend on the threshold of €150,000. Three points emerge from official sources:
- the threshold is assessed globally, across all your contracts (economie.gouv.fr); ;
- the portion of the gains which does not benefit from the rate of 7.5 % is taxed at 12.8 % (service-public.gouv.fr, sheet F22414); ;
- The brochure divides the products between 2VV and 2WW depending on whether the premiums do not exceed or exceed €150,000.
The basis for calculating the threshold is not formulated in the same way on all official documents. Before completing sections 2VV and 2WW, verify with the source what is being compared to €150,000 in your specific case. If you hold multiple contracts, or if you are close to the threshold, this verification is important.
The payment already made: box 2CK
Upon redemption, the insurer applies a flat-rate, non-final withholding tax. This is 12.8% for a contract of less than 8 years and 7.5% for a contract of 8 years or more (service-public.gouv.fr, fact sheet F22414). It constitutes an advance payment of income tax.
The brochure indicates that it is generally pre-filled in box 2CK, and that if not, it must be entered. According to the BOFiP (BOI-RPPM-RCM-30-20), it is credited against the income tax due for the year in which it was made, i.e., the total tax for the year, and only the amount exceeding this total tax is refunded. Therefore, the comparison is not made with the tax calculated solely on the proceeds of the redemption.
You can request an exemption from this levy based on your reference tax income for the year before last: the threshold is €25,000 for a single person and €50,000 for a married or civil union couple filing jointly (service-public.gouv.fr, fact sheet F22414). The procedure and deadline for submitting the request are not covered here.
The annual allowance
For gains from contracts of 8 years or more, a tax allowance of €4,600 (single person) or €9,200 (married or civil union couple filing jointly) applies. This allowance is granted for all assurance-vie contracts held by the same taxpayer, and only once per year, without carryover.
The BOFiP (BOI-RPPM-RCM-20-10-20-50, paragraphs 285 to 288) sets out the order of allocation: the allowance is applied first to the proceeds from premiums paid up to September 26, 2017, which are taxable according to the progressive tax scale, then to those that were subject to the flat-rate withholding tax upon receipt. The remaining amount is then allocated to the proceeds from premiums paid from September 27, 2017 onwards, first to the portion taxable at 7.5% of the standard tax rate (%), then to the remaining portion taxable at 12.8% of the standard tax rate (%), unless the option for the progressive tax scale has been exercised.
The method for taking it into account in the boxes of the form can be checked on the information sheet for the year and on your IFU.
The option for the scale: box 2OP
Checking box 2OP constitutes an option to be taxed according to the progressive income tax scale for all your investment income and capital gains from the sale of securities for the year. The brochure describes this as a comprehensive option for the taxpayer, using the progressive tax scale. Before submitting your tax return, check the status of this box: the brochure mentions the case of a box 2OP that was checked the previous year, which then appears pre-checked.
The rules for reviewing this option are not worded the same way on all official pages. Check them with the source before selecting.
Numerical example (fictitious profile)
Situation. Marc, a single French tax resident, opened a assurance-vie policy in November 2017 with a single premium of €90,000. He has not paid any other premiums and does not hold any other policies. In December 2025, the policy will be over 8 years old and worth €120,000. Marc makes a partial withdrawal of €30,000. He requests neither an exemption from the withholding tax nor opts for the progressive tax scale. Assumptions of this example: premiums and policy value are less than €150,000; the insurer has withheld 7.5% of the capital gains tax; Marc has no other taxable income, and his total income tax for the year is equal to the tax calculated on this proceeds, without any tax credits.
Issue. What amount should be reported, in which boxes, and what is the income tax balance?
Strategy. Apply the BOFiP formula to isolate the product. Then enter the amount in boxes 2UU and 2VV according to the instructions, before or after the allowance, provided the premiums do not exceed €150,000. Compare the 7.5% advance payment (%) already made, included in box 2CK, to the total income tax for the year, which here, by assumption, is limited to the tax on this product after the €4,600 allowance. In other cases, the comparison is made with the total tax, and any excess is refunded only if it exceeds this tax. Social security contributions are not included.
Result.
| Step | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Share of capital from the buyout | 90,000 × 30,000 ÷ 120,000 | €22,500 |
| Taxable income, before deduction | 30,000 - 22,500 | €7,500 |
| Case 2WW | bonuses under €150,000 | €0 |
| Payment already made (2CK) | 7,500 × 7.5% | €562.50 |
| Base amount after a deduction of €4,600 | 7,500 − 4,600 | €2,900 |
| Income tax due | 2,900 × 7.5% | €217.50 |
| Surplus refunded, under this single hypothesis | 562.50 − 217.50 | €345.00 |
The €7,500 figure is calculated before any tax allowance. The amount to be entered in boxes 2UU and 2VV, before or after the allowance, can be found in the information booklet for the year and on your tax statement (IFU). This profile is hypothetical. The contract values are assumed. The calculation ignores social security contributions and other elements of the tax return. It does not reflect your actual situation.
What changes depending on your situation
- The seniority of the contract : less than 8 years (2ZZ, 12.8 %) or 8 years and over (2UU, 2VV, 2WW).
- The date of your bonuses : those prior to September 27, 2017 fall under other categories.
- The total of your premiums across all your contracts : it conditions the distribution between 2VV and 2WW.
- Your reference tax income : it is a condition for exemption from the levy.
- Your other investment income : the option for the scale (2OP) is global.
- Your tax residence : the page is aimed at tax residents of France.
The rule depends on your situation. No results are guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions
In which box should a assurance-vie redemption be declared?
For premiums paid since September 27, 2017, on a contract of 8 years or more, the brochure places the total received in box 2UU, to be divided between 2VV (7.5 %) and 2WW (12.8 %). The exact amount to be entered, before or after the allowance, can be found in the information leaflet for the year. For a contract of less than 8 years, the brochure refers to box 2ZZ (see the 2026 Income Tax Practical Guide).
What should I put in box 2CK?
The flat-rate withholding tax has already been paid. It is usually pre-filled. If not, you must enter it (see the practical guide for Income Tax Form 2026).
Is the insurer's deduction final?
No. It is deducted from the total income tax for the year. Only what exceeds this total tax is refunded (BOFiP BOI-RPPM-RCM-30-20).
Does the €4,600 allowance apply to each contract?
No. It is granted for all your contracts and only once a year (service-public.gouv.fr, sheet F22414; BOFiP).
My IFU does not match what is pre-filled: what should I do?
If the pre-filled amount is incorrect, it can be corrected on the declaration (service-public.gouv.fr, sheet F22414).
