Agirc-Arrco retirement: how are points and supplementary pensions calculated?

In the Agirc-Arrco pension scheme, your annual earnings are converted into points. Upon retirement, the number of points acquired is multiplied by the point value. This value is set at €1.4386 on the official government website verified on January 1, 2026. A 1.4% increase in supplementary pensions was decided for November 1, 2026. The new point value is not included in the source consulted for this page: the value of €1.4386 should therefore be verified on the date of your calculation.

This page deals with the supplementary pension scheme for private sector employees. It does not cover Agirc-Arrco survivor's pensions, numerical reduction coefficients, or schemes for the self-employed.

How points are earned

Each year, the points earned are calculated as follows:

(compensation × point calculation rate) ÷ point purchase price

The purchase price of a point is also called the reference salary. For 2026, it is €20.1877. The point calculation rate depends on the salary bracket.

BracketAnnual salaryPoints calculation rateContribution rate
Tranche 1up to €48,0606.20%7.87 % (3.15 % employee share, 4.72 % employer share)
Tranche 2between €48,060 and €384,48017%21.59 % (8.64 % employee share, 12.95 % employer share)

The contribution rate and the points calculation rate are two separate things. You contribute at the contribution rate. Points, however, are calculated using the points calculation rate.

From a few points to a pension

The annual pension is calculated by multiplying your number of points by the service value of the point. The public service information sheet states that the number of points acquired during your career "is multiplied by the service value of the point.".

The service value of the point: a dated value

  • On the record verified on 01/01/2026: €1.4386.
  • On 14/10/2026, a revaluation of +1.4 % of supplementary pensions on 01/11/2026 was decided, according to service-public.
  • The same page indicates that the purchase value of the point "has not yet been fixed" and that it will be determined within the framework of the next negotiation of the social partners, for the period 2027-2030.

The figures on this page therefore use €1.4386 and the 2026 reference salary, as read on 17/10/2026. Before any calculations for your retirement, check the value in effect on your retirement date.

Example of the official record

The profile assumes an annual salary of €75,500 in 2026.

  • Contributions: (€48,060 × 7.87 %) + (€27,440 × 21.59 %) = €9,706.62.
  • Points: (€48,060 × 6.20 %) + (€27,440 × 17 %) = 7,644.52, divided by 20.1877 = 378.67 points in 2026.

Points earned without contribution

Certain periods offer free points, subject to conditions, according to the information sheet. It specifically mentions:

  • periods of work stoppage of more than 60 consecutive days for illness, maternity, adoption or work accident, during which you received daily allowances or an invalidity pension, or a work accident or occupational disease annuity corresponding to a disability rate of at least 2/3; ;
  • periods of unemployment compensated by the back-to-work allowance (ARE), the professional security allowance (ASP) or the specific solidarity allowance (ASS); ;
  • periods of partial unemployment of more than 60 hours, consecutive or not, in the same year.

The document also outlines the possibility of purchasing supplementary pension points for certain periods (some years of higher education and some incomplete years). The conditions and cost of such a purchase are not discussed here.

On the day of departure

Full rate and reduction coefficient

You receive the full supplementary pension if you are entitled to a full basic pension from the French National Old-Age Insurance (Assurance retraite). Otherwise, the amount is reduced by a coefficient. The information sheet states that the most favorable coefficient is used. The values of these coefficients are not provided in the information sheet; this page does not specify them.

Departure from age 57

The information sheet indicates that you can claim your supplementary pension from the age of 57 without claiming your basic pension.

Surcharge for children

The document outlines two pension increases:

  • a permanent increase, if you have had or raised at least 3 children; ;
  • a temporary increase, if you still have one or more dependent children when you retire.

According to the information sheet, you cannot receive both of these bonuses simultaneously: you will be awarded the higher bonus. Their rates are not listed here.

Payment frequency

The pension is paid monthly, on the first working day. Two special cases depend on the number of points:

Number of pointsContribution
from 101 to 200once a year, at the beginning of the year
100 or lessall at once

The application deadline

The required notice period before departure is not presented in the same way on all official documents. Check with your health insurance provider before setting a date.

Numerical example (fictitious profile)

Situation. Marc is a salaried executive in the private sector. His annual salary is €120,000 in 2026.

Issue. He wants to know how many points a year at this level of remuneration earns him, and what these points represent per year of pension.

Strategy. The formula from the payslip is applied: part of the remuneration is allocated to tranche 1, the remainder to tranche 2, then the 2026 reference salary (€20.1877) and the service value of €1.4386 read from the payslip are applied. The points are rounded to two decimal places, and the pension is calculated from these rounded points.

Result.

ItemCalculationAmount
Part in slice 1up to €48,060€48,060
Part in slice 2€120,000 - €48,060€71,940
Total to be converted(€48,060 × 6.20 %) + (€71,940 × 17 %)€15,209.52
Points acquired in 202615,209.52 ÷ 20.1877753.41 points
Membership fees for the year(€48,060 × 7.87 %) + (€71,940 × 21.59 %)€19,314.17
Annual pension corresponding to these points753.41 × €1.4386€1,083.86

For comparison, using the same method (pension calculated from points rounded to two decimal places):

Annual salary 2026Points earnedCorresponding annual pension (value of €1.4386)
€40,000122.85€176.73
€75,500 (example from the datasheet)378.67€544.75
€120,000753.41€1,083.86

The calculation is based on one year of earnings. It does not project a full career: the reference salary and service value are set by Agirc-Arrco and may change, and the final pension depends on all the points acquired, any bonuses, and the applicable coefficient. The amounts are limited to the product of the points and the service value of the point, without any other rules. The profile is fictitious. The figures illustrate the calculation and do not predict your actual pension.

If you move abroad

  • A posted worker continues to contribute to the retirement insurance and Agirc-Arrco as if he were in France, according to service-public (fact sheet verified on 01/09/2025).
  • Moving abroad during retirement does not prevent you from receiving your pensions, according to service-public (fact sheet verified on 26/04/2024).

Other expatriation situations are covered on a dedicated page.

What changes depending on your situation

  • Your remuneration, and its breakdown between tranche 1 and tranche 2.
  • Periods that award free points in your career.
  • Potential buybacks of points.
  • Your right or not to a full basic pension, which decides the full rate or the reduction coefficient.
  • The number of children raised and the number of dependent children at the time of your departure.
  • The service value and reference salary applicable on your departure date.

The rule depends on your situation. No results are guaranteed.
